Buying Prescription Glasses Online: What to Expect (and How to Avoid Common Mistakes)

Buying prescription glasses online used to feel like a gamble. Today, with an accurate prescription and a few minutes of preparation, it can be just as reliable as buying in a store, and often far more affordable.

As a board-certified optician who spent years manufacturing eyeglasses in an optical lab, I’ve seen what makes an online order go smoothly and what causes headaches. Here’s what to expect and how to avoid the most common mistakes.

What You’ll Need Before You Order

1. A current eyeglass prescription
Your prescription comes from an eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist. You can ask for a copy at your appointment, and you’re entitled to it. Most eyeglass prescriptions are valid for one to two years, depending on your state and your doctor.

2. Your pupillary distance (PD)
PD is the distance between the centers of your pupils, measured in millimeters. It tells the lab where to place the optical center of each lens so you’re looking through the right spot. PD isn’t always written on your prescription, so ask your eye doctor’s office, or measure it at home with our virtual PD measurement software.

3. Your current frame measurements (optional, but helpful)
Look on the inside of your current glasses’ temple arm. You’ll usually see three numbers, like 52-18-140. These are the lens width, bridge width and temple length in millimeters. If your current glasses fit well, these numbers are the easiest way to choose new frames that will too.

What to Expect When You Order

At Peek Eyewear, the process is simple:

  1. Choose your frame. Use our virtual try-on to see how a style looks on your face before you buy.
  2. Select your lenses. Pick single vision, progressive, readers, or frame only.
  3. Choose any extras. Select any add-ons like polycarbonate lenses or light responsive lenses.
  4. Add your prescription. Upload a photo or file of your prescription, or choose to email it to us later.
  5. Enter your PD. Select your pupillary distance during checkout. (If you don't have it yet send it later with your prescription)

Pricing is straightforward: $95 includes your frame plus single vision or reader lenses, and progressive lenses are an additional $99.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using your contact lens prescription

Contact lens and eyeglass prescriptions are not the same. Contacts sit directly on your eye, while glasses sit a short distance away, so the powers and measurements can differ. Always use your eyeglass prescription.

Using an expired prescription

Vision can change gradually without you noticing. If your prescription is more than a year or two old, or things have started looking blurry, it’s worth getting a new exam before ordering.

Guessing your PD

An incorrect PD is one of the most common reasons new glasses feel “off,” especially with stronger prescriptions. Take the time to measure carefully, or ask your eye doctor’s office for it.

Ignoring frame size

A frame that looks great in photos can still be too wide or too narrow for your face. Compare the measurements to a pair you already own and like.

Choosing the wrong lens type

If you need help seeing both near and far, a single vision lens won’t cover everything. Progressive lenses give you distance, intermediate and reading vision in one lens with no visible line. If you only need help up close, readers may be all you need. Not sure which applies to you? Check your prescription for an “ADD” value, which usually means you’d benefit from progressives or readers.

Expecting new glasses to feel perfect on day one

Even with a perfect order, new glasses, especially a new prescription or first-time progressives, can take a few days to a couple of weeks to feel natural. Mild adjustment is normal. If things still feel wrong after that, reach out.
