Nearsighted vs. Farsighted: What's the Difference?
If you've ever squinted at a street sign or struggled to read a menu in dim light, you've probably wondered whether you're nearsighted, farsighted, or something else entirely. These two terms get thrown around a lot, but they describe opposite — and surprisingly common — vision conditions. Here's what they actually mean, how they happen, and how your glasses correct for each one.
What Does It Mean to Be Nearsighted?
Nearsightedness, or myopia, means you can see close-up objects clearly, but things farther away appear blurry. If you can read a book with no trouble but can't make out the score at a football game or a road sign from a distance, myopia is likely the culprit.
Myopia happens when your eyeball is slightly too long (front to back), or your cornea is too curved. Instead of focusing light directly on your retina, the eye focuses it just in front of the retina, which blurs distance vision.
Common signs of nearsightedness include:
- Squinting to see far-away objects clearly
- Headaches from eye strain
- Difficulty seeing while driving, especially at night
- Sitting closer to the TV or the front of a classroom
What Does It Mean to Be Farsighted?
Farsightedness, or hyperopia, is essentially the reverse. You can usually see distant objects fairly well, but close-up tasks like reading, sewing, or looking at your phone can be blurry or tiring on the eyes.
This happens when the eyeball is too short, or the cornea is too flat, causing light to focus behind the retina instead of directly on it. Mild hyperopia sometimes goes unnoticed for years, since younger eyes can compensate by working harder to focus — which is part of why it often shows up as fatigue rather than obvious blur.
Common signs of farsightedness include:
- Blurry vision when reading or doing close work
- Eye strain or headaches after focusing up close
- Squinting or needing to hold reading material farther away
- Fatigue after screen time or detailed tasks
Nearsighted vs. Farsighted: The Key Difference
The simplest way to remember the difference: nearsighted means near objects are clear, far objects are blurry. Farsighted means far objects are clearer, near objects are blurry. Both come down to where light lands relative to your retina, just in opposite directions.
It's also worth noting these aren't the only two refractive errors. Astigmatism (an irregularly shaped cornea) and presbyopia (age-related difficulty focusing up close) are separate refractive errors that can occur alongside either one.
How Glasses Correct Each Condition
Your eye doctor corrects both conditions using lens power, written on your prescription as a positive or negative number:
- Nearsightedness (myopia) is corrected with concave lenses, marked with a minus (−) sign. These lenses spread out light slightly before it enters the eye, moving the focal point back onto the retina.
- Farsightedness (hyperopia) is corrected with convex lenses, marked with a plus (+) sign. These lenses bend light inward more, moving the focal point forward onto the retina.
The higher the number on your prescription, the stronger the correction needed — which is also why higher prescriptions sometimes call for thinner, high-index lenses to avoid a heavy or "coke bottle" look.
